27 Neck Ties

As many of you know, yesterday was another day of change. People keep asking me how I feel. I don't know, am I supposed to feel differently? People keep stopping me, my wife, my children and congratulating us. On what? Do that think this is something we have been working towards as a family? I think the topper of the day was when some one asked me, "How many times are you going to be a Bishop's Maid? I quickly responded, "Until I have 27 neck ties."

All of these experiences have left me wondering. I don't remember getting this treatment when I was called to be a primary teacher, cub master, home teacher, or other such callings. Well, I guess there was the circle of men who set me apart for those callings that wished me well, congratulated me, thanked me, or smiled grimly and said good luck. But, it was not a big deal.

Why is this calling any different?

Maybe it is that they don't understand the covenants we have made. I have given myself to my family and the Lord. I have covenanted that I will give, serve, sacrifice, and endure that which I am asked to endure. Haven't most of us?

Think about it. Do you give your ward chorister the same support, encouragement, and respect you give one who has been called to serve with in a position of leadership? How about your Sunday School Teacher? Or better yet, the person who greets you at the door and welcomes you to Sunday Services? Should you?

I think we should. I think each person called should get the same treatment, encouragement, and respect. We are all working towards the same goal, aren't we?

I also think that it does not matter where we are called to serve, we should serve with the same vigor, enthusiasm, and joy. May each of you do so.
