Scripture Thought

1 Nephi 8:5-7

Yep, I am still thinking about Lehi's dream.

In the previous verse, we read that Lehi saw this wilderness, but was he in it? Did he start in the wilderness? Was the man he saw in the wilderness? It makes one wonder.

As I read these verses again, the impression I get is that the man came to him. He bade him. What did they talk about? Was there more than just asking him to follow? He presented Lehi with an option. We all have this option. We can follow or not. How many of us have made such choices? As you answer that question, I ask how many of you are like Lehi? Are you still following? Where are you on the path?

We can learn so much from these few small verses. Lehi chose to follow. Who did he follow? Who does this man represent, the Holy Ghost, the Savior, God the Father, or just mortality? Was the choice easy? I am sure, at first it was. It always seems to be. Then, like Lehi, it is easy to get distracted. Once we are on the path, we continue to have to choice to continue following or not stop. At some point, we may lose sight of the man in white and then have to decide if we will continue following the path on our own. Are we ever really alone? or does it just seem that way?

Did Lehi get distracted? Was it the darkness of the wilderness? Was there something in the wilderness that introduced fear? Does he suddenly find himself alone? How many of us have been there?

Do we turn around and try to make our way back to where we were comfortable? Do we seek other paths? Or do we turn to the Lord and ask for his guidance, his strength, his will?

Each of us will face something in our own individual wildernesses. We should decide early what we are going to do about it when it does happen? We must determine not to let ourselves get distracted, but to stay focused on the ultimate goal. When we think we can go not further, we must remember that we are not alone. He is there. He will help us. We just need to ask.

If we have gotten distracted, wondered off the path, or loosened our grip on the rod, we can always make a choice to return, start over, renew our determination, and commit to follow. I hope that each of you do.
