Scripture Thought

1 Nephi 8:8

This is an interesting verse to read by itself. In the previous verse, Lehi recognizes that he is in a dark and dreary waste. Yet he traveled/wandered for the space of many hours. Why?

The thought that comes to mind is Pride. How long do we let pride distract us? Did Lehi think he could make it through the waste alone? How long do we remain distracted? Here we see that Lehi wandered for many hours. He lost sight of the man in white who was guiding him. Do we do the same thing?

This is verse very small. So when we read it, it is easy to think that he just knelt down and prayed. We skip the part of MANY HOURS. How long is an hour in the Lord's time? Think about that? Have we ever found ourselves or other wandering for the same amount of time? Lehi did not immediately turn to the Lord. He wandered first. What it Pride, Fear, Distraction? What is keeping you from stopping?

Once Lehi realized that he could not. Once he was humbled. Once he remembered the atonement. Lehi knelt down and prayed. He prayed for mercy. He prayed for help because he was humble enough to know that the Lord would show him mercy. He knew that this mercy was and is extended to all.

What can we learn? Don't be so full of ourselves that we forget to pray. Don't fill our lives with so many distractions that we lose sight of that which is most important, the path, who we should be following, and doing what we should be doing. We learn that no matter what path we are on, no matter how dark it may seem, no matter how strong we think we are, we can turn to the Lord. We should strive to do this sooner than later in our lives.

In doing so, we can overcome pride, fear, and distractions of the world. We can find light. We can emerge from darkness. He will guides us and extend his loving hand of mercy.

I know I have room for improvement, what about you?
