Scripture Thought

1 Nephi 8:9

So yesterday we talked about the distractions of Lehi. We talked of how stopped to pray. He prayed for the mercies of his Lord. After reading that small verse and moving to the next, what do we learn?

I have spent some time pondering this verse. When he was done praying, he began to see things. At first, it is easy to say that it is because Lehi was a prophet and the Lord was revealing things to him. I would think we need to figure out how to apply this small verse to ourselves, not the prophet. So how to do we learn and apply.

Lehi stopped wandering to pray. He stopped. He put aside his distractions, his fears, his pride. His focus was on the Lord in his communication, pleadings, and dealings. How many of us feel we can carry on a conversation with the Lord while wandering?

I know there have been and are times that I think I can. I am wrong. I may be speaking, but I am not listening. How can I expect the Lord to open my eyes, if I am not focused on what he is saying in return. We need to stop wandering.

As soon as Lehi did this, he was able to see those things the Lord wanted him to see. The field was always there, but he was not seeing it. Maybe it was one of the distractions. He was not understanding the dangers of such a place. Or was it an enticing place. This field represents the world. Was it that Lehi was drawn to the things of this spacious field. Was he distracted by all the things it had to offer? Was this the reason he lost sight of the man he was to follow?

We have the same field in front of us. Are we really seeing it or the distractions that are in it? Lehi had to stop, focus, and the pray with true intent to have his eyes open that he might be able to discern between right and wrong, good and danger, light and darkness.

Make the time to stop. Focus on righteousness. Pray with true intent. Think about it.
