Building

For some reason this word is on my mind today. I wonder what it is that we are building. If we don't know what we are building, how do we do it?

Many of us attended a funeral this weekend. One of my siblings let me know today that she had been asked about how she explained death to her child. From what I am understand, it was very simple for her to explain this to her child. I have been thinking about how this conversation went today.

First, she felt pretty confident in what death is. Second, she knows her child and how her child thinks. With this knowledge, she took the question, formed a foundation of where to start and built up from there.

Did she complete the building? I don't think so. I see her building to a point that answered her child's question and then stopped when she felt he could see the same vision of the building. Now it is up to him to complete the building and make it his. She helped form the idea, the foundation, and now lets him build upon it.

Her friend struggled with that. I was given the impression that her friend was not confident in her own understanding of death. Without that foundation, where does shes start, or upon what does she build?

The principle applies to all that we do in life. It does not matter whether it is work, home, marriage, school, hobbies, talents, desires, or goals. We have to start with a foundation. We have to feel confident in what it is we are building. We have then build accordingly.

I wonder if my Grand Father had a vision of what his house would look like when he was done? Did his vision change as built? I think it might have. He knew what he wanted. He wanted a haven to protect his family. He started with a foundation. He then started building. As his family grew, he expanded his foundation and continued building. However, his goal did not change. Though it looked a little different from what he first envisioned, it still served the same purpose.

When he died, he left the foundation for his children to continued building upon. It may not be the temporal structure they are building upon, but the eternal structure. What are you doing to build your part? Do you feel confident in what it is you are building? What are you doing about it?

Are you applying the same concept to life?
