Scripture Thought

1 Nephi 6:2

One small sentence. What importance or value does this small statement have? What does it tell us about these people, who they are, what they believe, where they come from?

Sufficeth it to say, we are descendants of Joseph.

So, what do we learn. Lehi and his family are descendants of Joseph. From chapter 5 we learn that they are then related to Laban. Does that mean they all went to the same family reunion? They had to have known of each other. Getting side tracked from the point of this message, I makes my stomach turn that Laban would treat his cousins the way he did. Even more, how hard it must have been for Nephi to slay his relative.

Anyway, back to the subject of Joseph. Joseph was known for his record keeping. His children were taught to keep records. We can learn from that. I pray that all the descendants of Joseph continue to keep such records.

Being descendants of Joseph must have been a great claim to fame among the people. Everyone knows the story of Joseph. He was faithful, diligent, genuine, a dreamer, an interpreter, a man of great vision, a man of leadership. I wonder if people looked to his descendants as we look to the children of Bishops, Stake Presidents, Apostles, and more. Because they are from the line of Joseph, did people expect more from them?

Joseph was an example of endurance. He never gave in. It was not easy, but he continued pressing forward, even when things were not looking kindly in his favor. He learned from his misfortune and turned weaknesses in to strength, with the Lord's help. I think that is an important lesson as well. In these times of trouble and despair, he turned to the Lord.

Joseph and his descendants were given many blessings and promises. They are to be very instrumental in bring forth the gospel in the latter days. I also find it interesting that he two children, Ephraim and Manasseh were part of the 10 lost tribes. They will be working from both sides of the gathering. I look forward to reading their records.

We are descendants of Joseph, what a powerful statement.
