Just Silly

I have been thinking about this quote for a few days now. I have mixed emotions about sharing it. I agree with Horace to a point. However, some studying that I have been doing worries me as well. So I am going to give it my best shot.

Mix a little foolishness with your prudence: It's good to be silly at the right moment.
-Horace

I really do believe that it is important to have fun. We cannot always be serious. We need to laugh, have fun, and enjoy life. You all know that I can and often am just a little silly. I have not perfected this ability. Sometimes, I am silly at the wrong moments. I therefore caution you.

Think about the reasons you are being silly. Are you being silly to relieve stress, have fun, and/or have a reason to laugh? Or are you being silly to make fun of someone, draw attention to yourself (making you the center point of focus), and/or are you trying to distract others from doing what should be done? The first one is OK, but the second one is not.

I have mentioned the past few days about a verse I was reading in 2 Nephi 9:14. Jacob tells us that we will have a perfect knowledge of our nakedness. I have been wondering what nakedness is. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve saw that they were naked. They ran and hide from the Lord. They used fig leaves make coverings. Maybe we are translating this too literally. Maybe they were trying to hide under the fig leaves. They did not want the Lord to find them.

I have started thinking this way since I started researching the word nakedness. From 2 Nephi 9:14 there are references to Genesis and Exodus. In Exodus, we learn about Moses coming down from the mount and seeing that the people were naked. When you look at the translation of this word, it means riotous, let loose.

The children of Israel and Adam and Eve were given commandments, just like us. The Lord expected something from them, just like he expects it from us. The knowledge that we would have would be the knowledge of what we were not doing. We would not have anything to show for what the Lord has given or expected of us.

When we are distracting others or letting other things distract us from doing what we should, we are loosing the opportunity to clothe ourselves in glory. Don't miss out on that opportunity. Does that make sense?
