Reaction to Fair
We have had some interestings discussions around the house the past few weeks. As I have pondered them, I started wondering what we could do to make them better. Well not to make the discussions better, but the reaction to the events described in the discussions. It all comes down to choice.
We talked about an incident the other day that at the time did not seem fair. One of our teachers recently decided to oversee a school activity that was timed. For some reason, it appeared that one team received more time than the other. A member of our family chose to stand up and voice their opinion regarding the matter. By doing so, they found that there were other students who were going to stand up with them. As a result, they let their emotions get the best of them and removed themselves from the playing area.
I have thought about this is incident. A couple of things happened that I would like to question. Was this person wrong is standing up and voicing their opinion about what appeared to them to be unfair? Probably not. However, the way that that voiced their opinion resulted in some disrespect, hurt feelings, and consequences that could have been avoided. It is not wrong to stand up for what you feel is right. However, we cannot expect everyone to agree with us, nor can we expect change to happen if we do not approach it will respect.
Now continuing the subject. Another one of the family members has been prepping and preparing to participate in a large event. Plans were made, the event was build up, and expectations were set. Unfortunately, things are not going the way expectation was established. This member of the family has to make a choice. How to they react to the fall in expectation? Will standing up and voicing the opinion of what they think is not fair change the program? Is it wrong to voice their opinion? The answer to these questions is the same, probably not. However, this person also has to make a choice as to what they are going to do. They can boycott the entire program, be offended, and sulk in misery or they can respectfully voice their opinion, if change does not happen, then the look for the best of what is left and make the most of it.
The joy we find in life depends wholly upon the choices we make. We cannot always control every situation we are placed in. What we can control is who we are, how we react, and who we represent in the process. Think about it.
