Scripture Thought

1 Nephi 4:32-35

I am still trying to figure these verses out. They are amazing.

How did Nephi do it? What kind of person was Zoram? How long did they walk together? What did they talk about? What happened during that conversation?

So this is what I see in my head. The charade is over. Suddenly what was a peaceful walk in the night has turned hostile. Zoram finds himself being held against his will, not really sure what is going to happen, probably wondering if he is going to lose his life or not. Heck, these guys have been labled thieves, what is going to stop them from killing him? I bet his heart was pumping kind of fast.

Jumping to the other side, Nephi has just killed a man. He puts on his clothes and impersonates him. Now, he his physically holding a man against his will. Why didn't he just kill him like he did the other? It would have been easy. Well, if Nephi was that kind of person.

The thought did not even enter his head. Instead, Nephi whispers in the ear of Zoram. He makes an oath with this man. To us in our day, that may not seem like much, but to them, it was one of the most powerful and binding things a man could do. We see it over and over again that even between men that were enemies, an oath was not something to be mocked.

"As the Lord liveth and as I live..." Nephi makes this oath in the name of God!

What does that say about Nephi?

Zoram, in this time of incredible time of excitement, was able to recognize the power of this oath that Nephi was making. He was able to recognize the power and source of this mission they were on. He accepts it.

What does that say about Zoram?

The bond that was made after just a few short minutes of time spent together became a bond of loyalties and friendship for life. Both men were looking for freedom. Not freedom from servitude, but freedom in God. What commits are you willing to make? Are you willing to make the same commitment for life ever after?
