Scripture Thought
1 Nephi 5:2-3
Interesting how this verse would come up at this point in my life. Sariah started to murmur. She began to doubt whether what she was doing, what her husband was doing, what they were doing, and why they were doing it. How many of us have been in the same shoes? How many of us are in the same shoes right now?
When was the last time any of us raised our hand to in opposition to a sustaining in church? When was the last time any of us complained about how the activity was handled, the way something was conducted, the way the lesson was taught, or the lack of teaching that was done from an instructor? When was the last time we laughed at or about someone serving in their calling? When was the last time we joked, belittled, or gossiped about someone we sustained? Is this any different?
I am sure that we would not do this when it comes to a General Authority, Prophet, Seer, or leader of such standing, but is it any different when we do it with local leaders, teachers, greeters, deacons, etc...?
When was the last time we raised the hand, but in our hearts knew that when called upon, we would find an excuse not to assist? Have we ever refused to assist those whom we have sustained? Why, because we don't see eye to eye, we have different hygiene habits, we don't like the way they dress, the way they raise their children, the car they drive, the way they make us feel, or other such reason?
Are we any better than Sariah? Can we learn from her? Did she repent? Did she repent before her children came back? Do we have to wait that long? As we start the new year, maybe we need to think about it a little. I know I have room for growth. I have been thinking about it.
