Scripture Thought
1 Nephi 5:10-17
These verses have a very important lesson for us if we read them, ponder them, and apply them to our lives.
Nephi and his brothers have now returned from Jerusalem. They have this big family party to celebrate and what is the first thing that Nephi feels is important to record. He records that his father has taken these plates and searched them from the beginning. What can we learn from this? It is important to search the scriptures. However, these plates were more than just scriptures. They were also full history and genealogy. Lehi searched them from the beginning.
How long do you think that took? I wonder how many times he searched them. What did he learn? When I think of these plates I think of them as all the things in the Old Testament before Jeremiah plus more. That is a great deal of history, genealogy, and the words of many prophets. I am sure it took more than one night. When we read these few verses it makes it sound like it was just a few minutes or a short period of time.
What probably took more time was the fact that what he learned he taught to his children. He was filled with the spirit of prophecy. It taught the word of God, by the power of the Holy Ghost, and it was so powerful that they were named as witnesses of this power.
Did they receive it? Did they apply it? How about you?
I learn that when I search the scriptures, I am able to learn about myself, the power of God, and receive insight to the mysteries he has for us. We must receive these things and then teach them to our children, our families, our loved ones and more.
Apply it.
