Confused or Concerned
This morning I met Princess at the temple to do baptisms. Afterwards, we went out to lunch and talked about life. She was expressing some concern about people living in her apartment. She just does not understand how some people can think to survive with out knowledge of simple stuff like:
How to do Laundry
How to Cook
What did difference is between and 9x9 and 9x13
What dish soap is and how it works
What a dishwasher is and what goes in it
How to turn on a dishwasher
The difference between clean and not clean
It was fun to talk to her about all these things. She realizes that everyone grows up in a different environment, but she just does not understand how they can leave home with so few simple skills. As we talked about it, I started wondering about this report on the news. A single mother, struggling with her 10 year old child, called the police for assistance in getting her to take a shower? It makes one wonder. Where was the father? Was it that the mother had just had enough? Was it the way the child was raised?
I could not help but continue to think about this as I read in the temple this evening. Jacob 3:7, 10-11. Even among the righteous there are those who do not raise their children to righteousness. Even among the wicked there are those who do. What I notice as I read Jacob 2 and 3 is that the Lamanites were families. Look at vs 7, husbands, wives, children. They were a unit, they worked together, they loved each other. What were the Nephites doing wrong? They were breaking this unit apart. They were not supporting, loving, or caring for each other. They were not really raising their children. They were focusing on themselves and their own personal pleasures.
Think about it. Think about what a family is and how children are to be raised. If we do not follow the guidelines set by the Lord, there is not promise for us.
