Temple Night
Last night as I departed the temple, I was pleasantly surprised to find a sucker under my wiper blade. There was a little note attached that said, "Thank you for serving in the temple tonight." It made me feel really good. It was simple, but just right.
I have been thinking about that little note and some of the other experiences of life. Last night was the first night of a new rotation. I was able to serve in different locations in the temple. I walked away with a different experience than I have had in the last few months. The last 45 minutes I am assigned to the locker room. When I get up there, everyone is gone. The last session has already started, initiatory is shutting down, and the only people I see are those patrons that are coming in to change back into their street clothes.
As I walked around the empty locker room, I wondered what kind of service I was rendering there. It almost seemed like a waste of time. I was just standing there, looking at lockers. I thought about it all the way home.
When I got home, there was an email in our box from the coordinator. He had shared with us some thoughts and feelings about the temple. A couple of the quotes caught my eye.
"Serving in the temple is all about the Patron's experience"
"Don't work in the temple without seeing the temple."
After reading those, I started reflecting upon my service. I did have wonderful night. I was able to meet, greet, assist, and observe many in the temple. Even while I was standing in the locker room. The service was not for me, but for those that were in the temple. I was in the locker room to assist those who may have had questions, fallen ill, or needed assistance in any way shape or form. Some nights may be slower than others, but I am there to serve.
I was suddenly reminded that it is all about how we serve, not where we serve.
