Scripture Thought
1 Nephi 4:19-25
Wow, once Nephi gets going he really goes. As I read these verses, several questions enter my mind:
How does it happen that Nephi sounds like Laban? Did he have such a relationship with him that he could accurately mimic his actions, voice, and personality? How is it that Nephi could so easily converse with the servants about the Elders?
As I ponder these questions, I know that Nephi may not have been involved with the elders, but I am thinking that maybe Lehi was. I wonder how big of an influence or participant Lehi was or had with this group of people. It makes me wonder if it was the Elders who influenced others to seek Lehi's life when he started listening to the prophets, when he started preaching the word of the Lord, and as it would seem contradicting everything they would want to accomplish.
I let those thoughts roll around my head for a while and it all makes a little bit of sense. So how is it that Nephi knew so much? Maybe we could learn from this. I imagine Lehi involving his family in life. He was teaching his boys through his example. He was preparing them to follow in his footsteps. He taught them in all things concerning the Jews. Nephi knew these people, knew how they operated, what their habits and traditions were, he knew the actions of the inter circles of the Elders. All of which, Laban was a part of. Do your children know how, what, where, and when of your callings? Maybe not the confidential information, but the workings there of? Are they involved in your life? Are you training them to follow in your footsteps?
How much of the veil was covering the eyes of Laban's servant? Why did he need the servant to carry the plates? Why couldn't he just take them and go his merry way?
The Lord truly does work in mysterious ways. Once Nephi was in tune with the spirit, they communication just seemed to flow. There was no hesitation. He knew what to do, where to go, what to say, and how to do it. He may not have understood why, he just did. That is what we need to do. We need to just do and let the spirit lead.
If you think about it, Nephi has just killed a major player in Jerusalem. He had just taken a valuable piece of history was well. If he had just taken the plates, the servant of Laban would have been able to ID him. This would have left an easier trail to follow. Nephi may not have know, but the Lord did. He just did.
