Serving T
It has been an interesting day. I spent it serving at the temple. In our prayer meeting this morning a counselor in the temple presidency promised us that if we would dedicate ourselves to the Lord while serving in them temple we would be blessed. I come home tonight feeling blessed. It is such a peaceful experience. If I could only make a living that way.
I had the opportunity to work in almost every area of the temple. The only place I did not work was on the sealing floor and the bride's room. All the areas were great, but today I had a particularly good time the laundry and the locker room. It was in these two areas that I was able to get to know the brothers and sisters I was serving with.
I learned that there are some talkers in the temple. At one point, I felt there were some that were trying to out do each other with mission stories. Some went all the way back to when they were 19. I know that sounds funny coming from me, but some of these brothers and sisters have served more than one mission. I think one brother said he had been on three missions, with his spouse. He did not get into the his mission of youth. Some the stories were getting so crazy that I felt like I was in a scene from Single's Ward where they were talking about who was members of the church and who was not, who baptized who, and who baptized the most. Some of the stories were about things they were able to accomplish on each mission.
I just kept quiet and listened. I needed time to reflect and ponder on each of these stories. One in particular caught my attention. After telling the story, the brother did admit that he was not there, but that he had just heard about it. Then he ended by saying that it was all based on a scripture reference found in Psalms or Proverbs. He did not know the reference, but he knows it is there.
The peaked my interest. On my next moment of reflection in the temple, I grabbed a Bible and started researching. The scripture they were talking about is actually in Rom. 12:19-21. I found the idea quite interesting.
The story was about the opening of a new temple. On opening day there were several protesters that were picketing the gates of the temple. The new temple president did not know what to do, so he called the temple department. They were perplexed so they called President Hickley. When asked what they should do, President Hinckley did not hesitate. He simply said, "Feed Them."
Following the prophets instructions, the temple president ordered several pizzas, drinks, and treats for the protesters and had them delivered to the front of the temple. After enjoying their meal, many of the protesters learned who had purchased the meal and were suddenly ashamed of what they were doing, packed up, and left the grounds.
I don't know about the story, but I like the idea. Do you have someone out there that just irks you? Someone rubs you raw? Someone who, it appears, is always out to get you? What do you do about it?
Here is the idea, "Feed Them." Buy they lunch, make them a treat, and then serve it with a smile. Do it with no other reason than, to say, "Just Because." Try it. I think you will be surprised with the results. Try it this holiday season.
