1 Nephi 4:14
Nephi is now starting to understand. The testimony that had been embedded upon his soul was now brought to remembrance. He started remembering all that he had been taught. His father had taught him well. He had been raised knowing the gospel. He believed. He knew of the temple. He learned from the priests.
But now, he is leaving Jerusalem. If he was supposed to live the covenant that he had made with his Father in Heaven, he would have to teach his children. The only way to teach would be to have the law, the commandments, and the gospel as explained by the prophets. He realized that he needed this record in order to do that. Without them, the covenant would be null and void.
We have that record. Do we learn it? Study it? Live it?
