The Average

Sunday during priesthood leadership, one of the counselors in the stake presidency talked about his fascination with sports. He talked about how as youth and young adult, he was almost obsessive about sports averages. He tracked every sport and player he could. If you asked him stats, he could quote them from memory. He remembered talking about individuals, who they where, what they were, and where they were going in life, based on those numbers. It was as if they defined the person in his mind.

Then recently, he started looking at some of the individuals he had placed on high pedestals and who they were, what they were, and where they had gone in their lives. He realized that the numbers told a different story.

I have thought about this a little. As we drove down to the "Happiest Place on Earth", we talked to the boys about their youth meeting. Tenor Man pulled out his notes and started talking about all that interested him. He remembered that it is important to know who you are when moving through this life. When you know who you are, it does not matter what others think, you know.

Those two thoughts have filled my mind today. Especially after having a PPI. Do you know who you are? Does that knowledge define you? Does it matter what other think? Do you have to have great stats, high notability, and be in the top 10 of popularity to define who you are?

I don't think so. In today's world, it appears to be very easy to put up a wall, hide behind mask of illusion, or fool those who are watching you. We have seen a rash of sports idols fall from off those pedestals. Their numbers did not really define who they are.

I have taken some time to meditate on who I am, what I stand for, what mark I have left or am leaving. I realize that there are areas that I probably need to improve upon. It does not matter how much I know, how popular I am, or how well I perform. Those things help, but they do not define who I am. It is the reasons why I know, have popularity, and perform the way I do. Those reasons have to come from within. You have to let that light shine.

How about you? What makes you? Are you proud of who you are? Are you improving?
