Scripture Thought

1 Nephi 7:8-15 cont.

So where did we leave off? Somewhere around verse 13? Sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't just start a scripture blog. I am so far behind in entering my scriptures stuff.

Anyway, vs 13- reading this verse makes me wonder if Laman and Lemuel did not spend a great deal of time looking over the bridge for greener pastures. It sounds like they spent a great deal of time murmuring about what they did not have, instead of counting the blessings of what they did have.

How many of us are the same way? We have to give Laman and Lemuel some credit. I am sure that living in the wilderness was not easy. Their father had led them out of a comfortable home. They had been chased, threatened, and almost killed. When the survive that they were sent back to fetch some striking young women, who by the way were probably living in a comfortable home. Now they are back on the road, but this time with these young ladies they were trying to impress. Maybe they let it go to their heads a little. How would you have acted?

So what do we learn from this? They were protected. They were still alive. They were not killed by Laban's minions. They were able to find fancy with these pretty young ladies and their father. They were with family. They had scriptures. Do I need to go on?

I see Nephi trying to help them with their vision. He reminds them that they need to open their eyes and see the big pictures. I think we can learn from this as well.

vs 14- Nephi starts to prophesy that the people of Jerusalem will be destroy. He knows this by faith. If you look at it from Laman and Lemuel's perspective, they have just left Jerusalem. It probably looked and felt the same way it did when they left. It was pretty hard to believe that things were going to change. However, I don't see Laman and Lemuel being part of those who did not reject the prophets. I have a feeling that they were part of the Jerusalem that was going to be destroyed.

What part of Jerusalem are we in? Do we stone them, throw them in prison, and seek to kill them? I hope not. However, are we any different than these people when we don't apply what they teach? Or receive the witness they share with us?

vs 15 continues this idea. Nephi says that he was commanded to speak these words to this brethren. Do we ignore the spirit like the people of Jerusalem ignored the prophets? Are there things we are commanded to say or do that we just don't? Why don't we? Are we afraid? Are they too challenging? Do they take us out of our comfort zones?

I don't think it was easy for Nephi to be this bold with his brothers. We know what comes next. It was did not get any better or easy for him for a while. Are you willing to stand up like he did? Do you?
