Scripture Thought

1 Nephi 7:16

They were angry with me... Where have we heard this before? Unfortunately, I think we hear it all too often in our world. I am not just talking about the Book of Mormon. These two brothers were angry with their younger brother, exceedingly angry. I don't know that I truly understand this. However, I see it all the time. Sometimes I worry that I am seeing it too much in my own home. Not just older against younger, but younger against older.

So, what can we learn from this verse? Do you think that Laman and Lemuel listened to Nephi go on about their murmuring and then went away stewing? Or did they just act in the heat of the moment?

We don't see Ishmael or his family getting angry from the words of Nephi. We just see it from these two, why? Did it have anything to do with the fact that they knew Nephi was right? Maybe it had something to do with the fact that they were being called on it in front of these girls they were trying to impress. Or did it have to do with the sons of Ishmael? Did they want make tough impression for them?

What did they have to prove? I don't know, but I do know that it is an easy trap to fall into. It all comes down to Pride. We get caught up in what the world thinks about us. This was not the first time that Laman and Lemuel had been upset with Nephi. I am sure that it started out small. The first time they were upset, it was a little thing that was dismissed. However, they let it build and fester. They continued to build upon one and made the next one bigger. Now they were talking about murder.

Can you see any similarities in your own life? What do we do about it? As of yet I have not seen or found myself binding those I love, but do we bind the Holy Ghost and walk away from him? Or are we letting Satan bind us and carry us away from the influence and presence of the spirit? Do we turn our backs on the Lord, who is calling to us to come out of the wilderness, and let ourselves be dragged down to the ways of the world?

If so, we need to stop. We need to cut the cords that bind us and turn to the Lord. We need to follow his voice. We need to take control of our own actions and put anger behind us. We have the power and assistance, we just need to do it.
