Humbling
I have been reading chapter 15 of 1 Nephi the past few days. Last night I read verse 21 or 22 that talks about the brothers of Nephi being pacified and then humbling themselves. The way it is written, it makes it sound all to easy.
What does it take to be humbled? Who is to say that we are sufficiently humbled? The few words before this statement get me as well. They were pacified. Does that mean that they had received enough information or that their dispute was now settled. Nephi had given them an answer they could all agree upon without disputing anymore?
Humbling oneself is not as easy as it would appear in the scriptures. We have to be willing to give in, give up, and do all that the Lord has requested of us. Sometimes it is admitting that we are wrong and that we need to repent/change to get the direction of our paths heading in the direction the Lord would want us to go. This requires that we lose the pride.
I see Nephi's brothers realizing that they should have been doing more. They listened to what Nephi had to say, thought about it, prayed about it, and then started doing something about it that would change the direction they were going. This did not just happen in a verse, a day, or a week. It could have taken them a year to make that change. I am not saying that it did, but it could have.
We know that they had started making that change, because they realized that they were learning something from Nephi, when they followed his teachings, it was making a change in their lives. They recognized that change for the better. Maybe they were happier felt more joy. When they realized this, they came back to Nephi for more. Read the chapter, where should they have gone? Where can we go?
