Just a screen
I don't know why, but today I started thinking about a play that was done by the high school a couple years ago. In one of the final scenes, the beast falls to the ground. Magic happens and his transformed back to his human form. This was done quiet cleverly on stage. They had a lift raise him to the air and then lower him slowly back down. Then at the last second, he would roll off the set and the actor in his human form would replace him.
This was a pretty amazing task to perform on stage in front of a live audience. First he was surrounded by a very dark back drop. Second, they added a layer of mist, magical enhancement, to hide the lift and the insertion of a double. It was well done.
As I think about it though, I wonder how many of us are doing the same thing to hide from or deceive those around us. I guess it is normally called "blowing smoke". Have you ever noticed that when the scriptures talk about being cast into captivity or darkness that it is never a sudden thing. The people who find themselves there have been filling there lives with screens of mist and darkness little by little until they find themselves in utter darkness.
I remember growing up in California and loving waking up on the mornings that were foggy. My siblings and I would play hide and seek among the clouds. I was always fascinated how the fog was thicker in some places than it was in others. If you wanted to hide properly, you really had to work hard to stay in the thickest fog.
I also remember how dangerous it was. On evening we were driving in the mountains when we came up on a low fog cover. It was strange. The fog hugged the road. We could see the tops of the cars a head of us clearly, but we could not see the road beneath us. We had to stop. When we opened the car door, the fog rushed in. When we stepped out of the car, we could not see anything below our thighs. We were stuck. We could not move forward until the sun burned hotter of the wind blew the fog away. Our path was completely obscured.
Is that what repentance is like? When we surround ourselves with obscuring mist of sin, lies, and deceit. We have to ask for the Lord to send his light and burn off the mist. Wouldn't it just be easier to always stay near the light so as to not ever get lost in mist?
It is like playing on those early mornings. For the moment it is cool to be able to dart in and out of visibility. We found ourselves following and walking as close as we could to the obscuring fog. Then when it lifted, we found ourselves on paths we did not necessarily want to be on.
