Back at the Ranch

I mentioned yesterday that I spent a few hours working on the cattle ranch. It was an interesting experience. It makes me wonder about my perspective.

For example, I am sitting here in the hospital, watching all the incredible advancements of modern technology work their wonders. Each nurse, orderly, cleaner, sweeper, or doctor wears a little device around their necks as part of the uniform. They push a button and they can call for help, locate co-worker, or just call home.

Working at the ranch was not much different. We had big tractors, railroad ties, electric augers, shovels, post hole diggers, and tamping bars. We worked in groups of 4 or 5. Yet, I walked/hobbled away exhausted. Even today, I am feeling muscles I did not know that I had.

So how did my grandpa do it? How did he work a farm by himself and keep getting up in the morning to do it again? How did the pioneers do it? I know that my grandpa had some benefits of the advancements of technology during his day, but I know he did not have all the advancements of today. I know the pioneers did not have anything even close to what my grandfather had, but they did it, day in and day out.

It makes me wonder if the advancements in technology are really benefiting us. They often make our daily duties easier, but do they help us? Do we value truly understand or value the true meaning of work? How do we learn or teach these principles?

The Queen, will spend the next few days in restricted mode. Her greatest concern has been what would happen to her house. Can we crush her fears? Let's do our best.
