Business as Usual
It has now been two weeks since the company we work for has announced their intent to merge with another major company in the industry. Over and over again, we hear our leadership say, we don't have a lot of answers right now, just continue business as usual. This has been on my mind quite a bit as of late. I keep trying to understand what it means.
What is Business as Usual? What is Usual/Normal/Safe/or Comfortable? How do we define it in today's world? I don't think that we can. The minute the announcement was made, the usual went away. We were all standing on different ground. Though it does not seem like it, business has changed in the minds of every customer, every employee, and every business decision that will be made. Every time some one is presented with a policy, change, or advancement, they will always have in the back of their minds the changes that are looming ahead of us and how the choice they make now will affect the future.
The more I think about it, the more I realize that life is just the same. The transition from elementary school to junior high, junior high to high school, high school to college, especially the last few years of each. Everything we do, think, act upon, or desire to achieve will be influenced by that lies ahead. Once we know that what lies ahead and we act upon it, we cannot go back. We Once in junior high, we cannot go back to the comforts of 5th and 6th grade where we ruled the elementary. Once we go to college, we cannot go back to the safety of high school. We must keep progressing.
So, my question is, are you? Are you trying to move back into a state of business as usual or are you moving forward in your life? You must take the ground you stand on today and make it the best it can be. You have to find the joy of living life where you are and not where you have been.
Recently, I read and article about a 22 year old who tried. He dropped out of his current life and went back to high school, posing as junior. It is true that he found some short lived comfort and safety. But I he was always worried about getting caught, not making the most out of who he was and what he could become. He was trying to go backwards instead of forwards. In the end, it all caught up to him. Not only did the lose the years of his life he had wasted trying to go back, but he lost a great deal of his future as well. Don't get caught in the same trap.
Define the ground you are on and make new definitions of usual. Make today, the best time well spent in your life. If you do, everyday will be a life worth living.
