Scripture Thought

1 Nephi 7:19

I learn a great deal from this verse. It motivates me to be a better person. When others see good they too stand up. There is power in numbers. Most of the time it takes one to stand up, then it always amazes how many want to stand up and do the same thing. It seems that fear of standing alone hold us back, when in reality we can combine with others.

Do you think that Laman and Lemuel were surprised when one of the sons of Ishmael agreed with Nephi? What about the mother of the girls they were courting? It would seem that they were trying to impress someone, their girlfriend's brothers, parents, or family by treating Nephi the way they did, but in the end, they did not.

I have often found that when some one who is letting their pride take over and then see themselves through the eyes of those they are trying to impress, it softens their hearts. They suddenly see how silly they are when trying to impress the ways of the world.

Did you notice that Ishmael did not get involved in this family dispute? Why do you think that was? Maybe he was letting this next generation figure it out for themselves. Maybe he wanted to see how his children would respond? They were being confronted with both a spiritual and physical challenge. Would they stand up? Would they do what is right? Would they think of themselves or others?

I think it is an interesting challenge. We are all going to have to go through it at some point in our lives. We are all going to have to decide to stand up, even if it is a lone. We are going to have to decide which side of the line we are going to walk. Have you figured it out?
