Ticking?

It is time? Is it water? Is it some monster insect living within my walls trying to drive me insane? I have not idea. I guess I will go insane before I figure it out.

We have had a wonderful night. The sun set, the house is warm, there was not a great deal of rain, the boys went to bed at a reasonable hour. The last session at the temple was lightly attended so they sent me home early. We anticipated a restful nights sleep.

Around midnight, the Queen was up and running for the lavoratory. She was not happy. When she came back to bed, she tossed and turned trying to get comfortable. She thought this would keep me awake, but she was wrong. I was already awake. I let her know that this is a normal night for me.

At 3:50, Moose came upstairs to let us know that something was leaking in the furnace room and there was water all over the bathroom floor downstairs. I jumped out of bed to find that the expansion tank on the water heater was leaking. I have no idea why. We will have to find out what would cause the expansion tank to have water in it and why is it for. But we were not going to call anyone at 4 a.m.

We turned the water off to the house and crawled back into bed. The Queen, though she denies it was sawing logs within minutes. They were not small logs and I don't think they were easy to cut. She was not sawing restfully, I will give her that much.

I on the other hand was struck with this fabulous idea. This was my test to see if that lovely ticking sound was really water. We had the water turned off in the house. I had turned on the cold water from the tap to make sure that the pipes were clear and that the leak had stopped around the expansion tank. So there I lay waiting...1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,....Tick.

Great! The ticking did not stop. Well, I know from experience that I can count to 20 between ticks. I started the experiment. If it was water and the water was off, logic tells me that eventually the ticking would slow down. I ran the experiment until almost 4:45. It never varied.

Some have wondered if it is the water bed in our room. I did that experiment when we removed the carpet from our room. The ticking remained constant through it all. So what is it? I have no idea. However, I do know that it is consistent.

Sometimes I wonder what would happen it if stopped. I have grown so accustom to it, would it drive me insane if it stopped? Isn't it interesting how some things in life are that way? The little things drive us insane, nervous twitches, random noises, constant tapping, leaving the light on in the bathroom, always looking for something to do, ...etc. Then when they are not there anymore, we miss them. Don't waste time looking for greener pastures. Treasure the pasture you are in and those you share it with. Someday you may find that when you are in other pastures, the one you left was better.
