1 Nephi 4:1
I love these types of wake up calls. Nephi has just been beaten to a pulp with a stick, rescued by an angel of the Lord and again, faces the laziness of his brothers. They have no faith. They are asked to do something would rather put it off until a later day, wonder why they have to do it, or they look for every excuse not to do it. We are hearing only a small one. Laban and his men are too powerful. I wonder if they also said things like:
- We will do it tomorrow
- Why does it have to be done now
- If Dad wants them so bad, why doesn't he do it
Nephi send this wake up call. This is not just something we are doing for fun. We did not come back to Jerusalem to visit friends, catch a movie, do a high adventure camp out, or play pick up sticks, we are here with a purpose. A purpose that was given to them, via their father, from the Lord. It does not matter what the task is, when the Lord commands, we need to remember that he will be at our side. We may not see the help, but it is there. Nephi reminds them that an angel of the Lord has just visited them because they are not or they don't seem to be moving forward and the Lord sent and angel to make sure it happens.
So, how many of us do the same thing when asked to do something by our Bishop, YM/YW President, Stake, Quorum, or Auxiliary Presidents? How many of us do the same with our own personal responsibilities? We are here on this earth with a purpose. Are we working towards them? Are we looking for excuses, making excuses, or being the excuse?
We need to follow the admonition of Nephi. We too need to be faithful in living up to our covenants. We need to remember that what we have, who we are, and where we are is because of the Lord. He is all powerful. He is mightier than all the forces of the earth combined. Wake up and know, recognize, and do. Let us not be quick to forget this.
