Picking up a spare

We had an enjoyable day. The Queen and I had both had the day off. The Queen was taking one of her left over vacation days. I was taking the day off because I get to work this weekend.

Anyway, we spent the morning at the temple. We have both been working at the temple, but it has been a while since we went together and did work for others. It has been a while since I have been in an endowment. I get the opportunity to do work in initiatory every once in a while so that we are always doing something, but there is no way I could take 90 minutes out of my temple schedule to so an endowment session.

It was so nice just to be together, in such a wonderful place, and knowing we were doing something for someone.

From the temple, we picked up the Tenor Man and Horn Man and headed to Provo to hook up with Princess. Moose had play practice, so he was not able to join us. We thought it would be fun to just hang out. Horn Man wanted to go bowling while he was off track, so this was the perfect time.

Before I go on, you must know that none of us are bowlers. We just like to laugh and have fun at our own expense. Each of us has our own style. Each of us use different size bowling balls. Each of us approach the bowling alley a little bit differently. But the goal for each of us was the same. We wanted to knock down as many pins as we could with two attempts. If we did not knock them all down the first attempt, we had to try to get what we missed on the second attempt.

I have thought a little about this on the way home. Isn't life like that sometimes. When a challenge is placed before us, we must individually use our styles of life to figure out what tools we are going to use to complete the challenge and how to approach it. The end result is the same. We all want to pass the challenge.

Sometimes we do not succeed on the first attempt. We then have re-evaluate our approach, our style, and the tools we are using. We my have to put a different spin on how we are going to accomplish the task before us. In essence we spend our lives trying to pick up the spares, figuring out how to improve our attempts.

The good thing that I learn from this analogy is this:
- If I don't succeed on the first attempt, I keep trying. Unlike bowling, we are not limited at
our attempts.
- If we were to practice more, we would probably be better. Or in other words, the more we
do the easier it will get. Our bodies, spirits, and souls we figure out who we are, what are
capabilities are, and what our strengths and weaknesses are.
- Laugh. Don't get down on yourself when you don't succeed the first time. We all throw
gutter balls. Sometimes we slip and fall on our approach. The important thing is that we
get back up and try to pick up the spare.
- Have fun. Make what you are doing fun. Don't look at it as a burden, but as an opportunity
to learn, grow, and improve ourselves.

Keep going for the spare and remember, life does not limit us. We just keep trying.
