Sweet Tea

I did some training today about the procedures we would go through if a plane crashed. Part of this training covers the effects of stress in our lives and how to deal with it. I thought it would be important to discuss some of the natural responses to stress and how to deal with them.

Physical - Headaches, stomach ache, irritable, tense, cotton mouth. These are all normal. How do we deal with them? Darkened room or pain relievers, hard candy, antacids, and daily exercise.

Emotional - Anger, depression, anhedonia, lack of trust. In times of stress we may go through all of these ranges of emotion. How do we deal with them? Don't hold it in, talk to someone about it. Even if you have to sit down and write it out in a journal. Vocalizing is important. It is also important that you take time to laugh and have fun. Don't lock yourself in and away from everyone who can help you.

Mental - Memory blocks, leaving jobs undone, inability to make decisions. This happens to me all the time and I don't think I am stressed. Make check list, ask for assistance, trust yourself.

As we were talking about these things, agents started commenting that it just sounded like we needed to find our comfort zone. That is true. One agent commented that when he is stressed, he makes some sweet tea, locks his door and turns on some classical music. That is his comfort zone. We all need to find that comfort zone. It may be talking to someone we love, finding joy in life, or making a comforting drink. Learn how or when you are having stress, learn to deal with it. Life will be so much easier if you do.
