Boredom

There have been several discussions at work, around the community, and on all of our myriad of social networking sites lately about government sponsored programs. I have always found it interesting. Most people want to see change and don't like to see others suffer, but they don't want to be the ones to pay for it. By the time the discussion is over, there is always something said about the receiver of such benefits needing to do something in return for such benefits. That something should be determined by the receivers ability or disability.

As you can tell, this has been on my mind. I start wondering how far it will go. Then I start wondering what these people do. I stopped by a neighbor's house last night to see how he was doing. I knew that last October, he was scheduled to go in for some surgery. He was going to be out of work for a few weeks. Well, a few weeks before the surgery, he was furloughed. As a member of the union, they told him they would take care of him.

Here we are in September and he is still not working. They called him back for 2 weeks right after he had the surgery, but he could only do light duty work. They let him go again. He has been on unemployment now for over 6 months. He just applied for an extension and will get an additional 5. Because he is union, he is told that he cannot seek employment in his field. He is getting less than half of his normal income from the government, he wants to work, but they tell him he can't. Who is paying for it? I wondered that as he complained about his lack of funds and cracked open another can of beer.

I asked him what he did all day. He tells me his is bored out of his mind. He takes the kids to school and then sits in front of the computer or TV for hours. His wife says that he is getting out of control. He is either building things they don't need or destroying things they do need because he thinks he can make them better.

What message is being sent? How many other people are in the same boat? This all came to a head this morning when I learned that some of my children became bored over the summer. I am just now finding the results of their boredom. They were either destroying things that I need or building things we don't need out of things that we do need. Is there similarity?

The Lord calls this idleness. It is one of the most challenging things to overcome. I encourage you to stay focused. Ask yourself, what am I doing with my idle time? Don't let it go to waste or destruction. You will be amazed at what you can do with that time. Take the challenge and fill it with worth while projects or service.
