Lil' Joe

I had the opportunity to hang with a few of the primary children and their lovely Primary President this past evening. (Since I still feel like my day is going I am going to say evening. I know it is early. I am looking for something to do that will keep me awake at work while monitoring self paced training.)

Anyway, we had a wonderful evening. There were 10 in our primary who memorized all 13 Articles of Faith. They became members of Club 13. The oldest children are 11 and the youngest is 4 or 5. Because they all met the challenge of memorizing them, they were invited to this special evening.

We had pizza, root beer, soft cushy chairs, watched a movie, and played dodge ball. Yes, there was a theme. The movie we watched was a Veggie Tales "Lil' Joe". It portrays the story of Joseph in the Bible, with a little twist. Joe is sold to a saloon owner. He helps in the saloon by selling root beer, peanuts, and pizza. The name of the town he works in is "Dodge Ball City", hence the dodge ball. So, now that you have the idea of what we did, lets talk about what I learned.

After the movie, the Primary President wanted to know what the club learned from the movie. They all talked about the silly things that happened in the movie. Then with a little coaxing, they came around to see that even though we are good, we live the way we are supposed to, sustain and support the principles, leaders, and guidelines of the gospel; there are times when we are placed in circumstances that are not pleasant. This happened to Lil' Joe.

What did he do, he made the best of what he had to deal with. When he was sold into labor, something he did not want to do, he did his very best. He became the best slave/employee he could be come, no matter what obstacles were placed in front of him. When he was in jail, instead of focusing on self pity, he helped build those around him so that his environment was a better place to be in. He lost himself in the service. Were there times he prayed and asked for strength, yes. He did not ask why and dwell on it, he asked for help to keep moving forward.

We can learn from this. We may not enjoy the classes we are in, the work schedule we have, people we are teamed up with, it happens. What do we do, we continue doing our best, doing our part, carrying our load and sometimes even more. We don't whine about it, we pray for strength to continue.

There may be times when we finally figure it out or think that we have and suddenly things spiral down hill. Those that we have built relationships with are taken away or we are asked to work with people who are lacking in skills. What do we do, we start small and build them up. We help the people that we are working with improve themselves so that our environment improves. We let our light shine and help other grow with a little kind nutrition.

Think about that where ever you are, in our school, work, callings, or family. Be the best you can be and improve the shining moments.
