Checking Out

Things at work have been kind of hectic. We have lots of changes that are taking place, not only policy changes, but the way things are done. I have been there for some 21 years. The division I work in only consists of about 2200 people. Prices are down some 25% from what they were 21 years ago and the world wonders why we are not more profitable. With these changes, it also means that the way we do things are different. Web conferencing, self paced modules, do it yourself training, and stuff like that. Some times I feel more like an administer instead of and facilitator. The changes have been frustrating. I don't understand or see the complete vision of what is trying to be accomplished, yet is happening all around me. I realize that I have some choices to make. I either give up and check out or I get involved and check the changes out.

Life is that way. It does not matter how old you are or what you are doing there is always going to be change. We will find ourselves asking why things have to be done a certain way or why are they changing. If we dwell on those things too long, we will find ourselves standing alone.

I don't always agree with the changes that are taking place, but if I check out, I will just find myself without. I have found that I can voice my opinion. It is not always listened to, but I can voice it. Again I am left with choice, I can get upset that I was not being heard and check out or I can say that I did all I could to be heard and start checking out the things that are happening around me so I am not left without. It is not bad to question why, it is not bad to stand up for something we feel passionate about. We just need to understand that sometimes, we are just going to have to give in and do as long as our morals are not compromised.

With the recent changes that have been taking place, there have been many who have just checked out. They put their heads down on their desks and give up. As I talk with them and ask them why, they can't give me an answer. It saddens me. I know them for who they are and can see their potential. However, by checking out, they have lost all opportunity to make the change for the better. I feel it is better to voice my opinion, but continue learning, doing, and checking out the change so that if the opportunity presents itself, I can at least be there to make the change easier to understand or deal with.

Please don't check out of life. Don't look for reasons or things that will distract you from checking out what is happening around you instead of just checking out. Staying focus, being diligent, and progressing in life is what it all about. And always remember, when the going gets rough, there are people all around that are willing to check things out with you instead of just checking out.
