Just Comparing

I am sorry that I missed yesterday, it was a long day. I left for Houston at 5:30 and did not get home until after midnight. I then had to get up this morning for a 7 o'clock start time. Needless to say, I am a little tired. So I will just a leave a little thought.

I spent a lot time with a bunch of big wigs at work. I spent a lot of time with those in equal positions as well. I was amazed at how much everyone compared themselves, their offices, their people, or their performance to those of others. Why do we do it? Do we try to make ourselves better? Or do you try to make ourselves look better? Do we compare ourselves to others, pick up on their good points and adapt them to our own lives?

I always wonder about this. It hit me again today when my supervisor wanted to send me home. He told me that he was jealous that I had built up all this extra free time at work by working extra hours. I looked at him kind of confused. I don't always like spending the extra time at work, but I do when it is needed. I have built up this time over the past two years.

I asked him why he didn't have the time built up? He works long hours like I do sometimes. He then looked at me with a confused look. I pointed out to him that we had just talked about it the other day. His view was that if someone can be just as productive in 4 hours as another can be in 8, then that person who performed in 4 should be able to go home. I asked him if he could do that? His theories and expectations of others was suddenly back in his lap. He was not comparing himself to others, but to himself and what he felt that he could perform to make himself a better person.

Shouldn't we all do that introspection? Shouldn't we all strive to do just a little bit better than our personal best, not put down others to make us look good, or put ourselves down, because we feel that some is out performing us. I keep saying, do your best and the Lord will take care of the rest. We hear that over and over again from President Monson.
