Productivity

I had an interesting discussion today at work. My supervisor and I were talking about some proposed changes to our incentive program. He did not like the idea. You see, the new program would be based on a a tool we used in the office to measure productivity. His arguments were very good. You see this tool uses averages.

Everyone in each function is compared to each other. Their measurement is then averaged and highs and lows are determined. My supervisors point being that every month, there is always going to be losers. Not everyone can succeed on the same plane. He felt that everyone should be measured on one matrix and the rest should slide. I did not agree with him, yet I could see where he was coming from.

I felt that we all need to be measured in multiple areas. If I were to follow his plan, then one person, who is very talented in sales, could work 4 hours a day, produce the same amount as others working 8 hours a day and then do what he/she to do for the rest of the day. I felt that this behavior would be unethical. If it is productivity that we are measuring then that talented person has proven themselves and should then be required to produce according to that talent or help those who are not a talented.

However, those who are not as talented should have something to work for. Once they make that plane, they set a new goal. We should all have goals. In the Lord's plan, we are not going to be compared to each other, but how we dealt with the talents we were given. We will be measured on how well we endure, if we are doing our best, if we are keeping all of the commandments, not just those we are good at. We will not be averaged in. Everyone has the same opportunity as the next to reach the same potential. We just have to work at it. Some harder than others, in certain areas, whereas those who find ease in that area may have to work harder in the areas where we find ease. It all works for our benefit.

How should we be measured?
